Steve Hammond was a sixth-round draftee by the Brewers last year, but he's impressed at three levels in one year with ERAs well below 3.00 at each stage, and respectable strikeout totals as well. John Manuel in Baseball America recently said of him that "Hammond is interesting; he's had elbow problems in the past and he's 23, but he has the stuff and maturity to hop on the fast track. Plus fastball, good slider, good feel, honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if he got to Milwaukee in 2006." Since he hasn't lapped single-A yet, that would mean a late September callup at the earliest, barring some catastrophe to the team's starting rotation.
