Aussie Michael Collins has had some good years in the Angels system; he doesn't
generally show up on most talent rankings, in part because he's
old for his leagues. Part of this is the fact that the Aussies
don't have organized Little Leagues for very young kids, so in
some ways he's had to learn on the job as it were. He repeated
Cedar Rapids, and is currently hitting .299/.365/.424
in the Cal League. Stephen Smith once likened him to Mike Piazza; if that's true, he's actually declined a
bit from his 2005 numbers acquired in a pitcher's league. He
used to be able to take a walk, but his strikeouts have
skyrocketed at this level (48/12 K/BB ratio). Signed in 2001,
he'll be a minor league free agent at the end of this year.
