The Mariners have lately had more
success with their international scouting than in the June
draft. Curacao native Wladimir Balentien is an example of this; he was fourth in the Cal League
last year in extra base hits, with Brandon Wood of course
leading the league. Balentien is striking out in about a third
of his at bats, so his plate discipline is, um, a tad weak. In
an organization whose farm ranking fell substantially due to the
promotion of Felix Hernandez, Belentien didn't even crack the
top ten in Baseball America's 2006 rankings,
though John
Sickels ranked
him 10th overall in the M's system. He could still play
himself into usefulness.
