Randy Keisler
exemplifies the failings of the Yankees farm system in recent
years; hyped as a can't-miss pitching prospect, he missed badly after
a cup of coffee in 2000, and a real tryout (6.22 ERA in 50.2 IP)
in 2001.
Released at the beginning of 2003, he spent the next three
years in the Padres, Rangers, Astros, Mets, and Reds' systems,
playing briefly in San Diego, getting a longer look (56.0
IP including four starts, for an abysmal 6.27 ERA) in
pitching-starved Cincinnati. The A's signed him to a minor
league deal, and his 6.75 ERA -- in 8.0 IP, one of their longer
trials for a guy on a minor league deal -- says he won't
make the team.
