Tommy John surgery is now so pervasive, that teams are entirely
willing to bet on its future results, as witness the Cubs with
Scott
Williamson.
Williamson hasn't had a good season since his 2004, when he went
under the knife. The Cubs are betting on the come by picking up
his 2006 option; with a 5.65 ERA last year, the danger of
substantial downside in leaving him in the pen is very present.
But if he's back, as with Paul Byrd and Jon Lieber, the Cubs
could have made a very shrewd bet.
