Once upon a time -- before 2001 -- Meche was
the luminous starter who would become the Mariners' new
hard-throwing ace. Shoulder surgery in 2001 blew away that
possibility, and now he's reinvented himself -- if you can call
three consecutive years of 5.00+ ERAs a "reinvention" -- as a
back-of-the-rotation guy. The M's horrible track record with
young pitchers has become legendary, and Meche is one of the
poster children for that incompetence.
